PROSODY & ATTACHMENT AMBIGUITY Is it all relative? Effects of prosodic boundaries on the comprehension and production of attachment ambiguities
نویسندگان
چکیده
While there is ample evidence that prosody and syntax mutually constrain each other, there is considerable uncertainty about the nature of this interface. Here we explore this issue with prepositional phrase attachment ambiguities (You can feelA the catB with the feather). Prior research has been motivated by two hypotheses: 1) The absolute boundary hypothesis (ABH) posits that attachment preferences depend on the size of the prosodic boundary before the ambiguous phrase (boundary B). 2) The relative boundary hypothesis (RBH) links attachment to the relative size of boundary B and any boundary between the high and low attachment site (boundary A). However, few experiments test the unique predictions of either theory. Study 1 examines how syntax influences prosodic production. The results provide modest support for RBH and stronger support for ABH. In Study 2 we systematically vary the size of both boundaries in an offline comprehension task. We find that absolute boundary strength influences interpretation when relative boundary strength is held constant, and relative boundary strength influences interpretation when absolute boundary strength is held constant. Thus our theory of the prosody-syntax interface must account for effects of both kinds.

متن کاملEffects of prosodic boundaries on ambiguous syntactic clause boundaries in Japanese
We report the results of experiments designed to investigate the effects of prosodic boundaries on resolving ambiguous syntactic clause boundaries in Japanese. The head-final, prodrop nature of this language generates abundant syntactic attachment ambiguity for sentences that contain relative clauses. Two types of sentences with differing head nouns modified by relative clauses were examined. S...
متن کاملRelative clause attachment ambiguity resolution in Persian
The present study seeks to find the way Persian native speakers resolve relative clause attachment ambiguities in sentences containing a complex NP of the type NP of NP followed by a relative clause (RC). Previous off-line studies have found a preference for high attachment in the present study, an on-line technique was used to help identify the nature of this process. Persian speakers were pre...
متن کاملRUNNING HEAD: AVOIDING ATTACHMENT AMBIGUITIES Avoiding Attachment Ambiguities: the Role of Constituent Ordering
Three experiments investigated whether speakers use constituent ordering as a mechanism for avoiding ambiguities. In utterances like "Jane showed the letter to Mary to her mother", alternate orders would avoid the temporary PP-attachment ambiguity ("Jane showed her mother the letter to Mary", or "Jane showed to her mother the letter to Mary"). A preference judgment experiment confirmed that com...
متن کاملProsodic grouping and relative clause disambiguation in Mandarin
The study discusses the role of prosodic grouping in the Mandarin Relative Clause attachment disambiguation. The grouping effect is explored under the Implicit Prosody Hypothesis (IPH) from four aspects of sentence processing experiments: default production, contrast production, online processing, as well as offline processing. It is found that (1) the length of RC greatly impacts ambiguity res...
